Karanga Manu
can be blown across like a bottle or side-blown like a Koauau to produce a range of calls.
POROTITI
The string is wound up then pulled rythmically, making the stone spin, which creates a "whirring" sound. Porotiti were known by several names and were used by the Maori as healing tools. The vibration and movement was beleived to help free up conditions such as arthritis.
PUREREHUA (Bullroarers)
Known to have been used by some Maori tribes to bring rain. Also played at times of Tangi (funerals).
