I am a multimedia carver, working mostly with jade (greenstone or Pounamu, as it is known to the Maori people of New Zealand).
In 1994, I was introduced to traditional Maori musical instruments (Taonga Pūoro) - and was captivated. Since then they have been a large part of my focus.
In these pages you will find examples of my work, as follows:
- The Pendants and Earrings section showcases carvings in different types and colours of jade and semi-precious stones.
- The Sculptures section features pieces created mainly in jade, other stone and wood.
- The Instruments section includes some Taonga Puoro (NZ Maori musical instruments) and basic playing instructions for the Koauau (Maori flute).
- The Wayne Costar section tells a little about me, as well as sharing my experiences with a couple of friendly wild dolphins and features links to websites I recommend.
Please feel free to contact me regarding availability of individual pieces or commissions.
